I have been in business over 40 years and one constant of that span, whether I was an employee or owner was taking time to give back to the community. No matter what your circumstances are or where you live, chances are there opportunities for you to volunteer. It could be the food pantry, an animal shelter, or your local school, who need your time and treasure. And while helping your community, volunteering also provides leadership opportunities for you and your employees, which leads to increased staff performance and fulfillment and, ultimately, increased productivity and sales.
I want to tell you about an organization that I belong to and the work it does. Last year I joined the Lake Country Rotary Club located in Hartland, Wisconsin. In addition to supporting local charities and projects, like the Hartland Splash Pad, we have a mission each year to Haiti to bring the desperately poor citizens of that nation water filters, sunglasses, eyeglasses and much more. By joining Rotary I was able to do something for the Haitian people that I could never do by myself. In addition, our local chapter has banded with Rotary chapters throughout the world to eliminate polio from the face of the earth. We are over 99% towards our goal, with only a few small areas that are not free from this disease.
So I encourage everyone to seek out a cause or organization that can help you give back and make a difference in your community and the world. As motivational speaker Jim Rohn says, “Giving is better than receiving because it starts the receiving process.”
